Below we will outline each category in more detail.

Common BCom jobs after graduation

What are the accounting / CPA career options?

The accounting track is a very popular career track among BCom jobs.  Accountants are responsible for preparing financial statements, performing audits, finding cost savings, and assisting with capital raising, as well as with mergers and acquisitions.  To be a professional accountant you should be good with numbers and have strong problem solving and communication skills to rise up through the ranks.

The most common way to start an accounting career is in public practice and pursuing the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. The process typically kicks off in September when public practice firms go to university campuses to recruit students for summer internships and permanent positions.

What are the Bcom jobs finance career options?

The finance track is also very popular among B.Com students and offers a wide range of career possibilities. The opportunities are divided into two main categories: corporations and financial services firms.

Most public or private corporations have a finance department which includes functions like reporting, treasury, FP&A, investor relations, and corporate development.

The financial services firms that offer BCom jobs are engaged in activities such as investment banking, lending, insurance, asset management, research, trading, etc.

Landing a job in finance is very competitive, with the ratio of applicants to available positions often being anywhere from 10:1 to 100:1.

What are the marketing career options?

Marketing can be an exciting BCom jobs career path. It’s very revenue focused and drives growth in a business.  Most businesses have a sophisticated strategy and process in place to market their products or services.

The two most common ways to enter the industry are working at a corporation or an advertising agency.  Marketing is less numbers-focused than accounting or finance, however, it is becoming increasingly data-driven with digital marketing strategies and the advent of Google Analytics.  Marketing is an excellent and often overlooked way to enter finance and accounting, as well as other industries. Investment banking and accounting firms are increasing their focus on digital communication and stakeholder engagement.

What are the human resources (HR) career options?

HR, which is also referred to in universities as Organizational Behavior and Human Resources (OBHR), provides a great deal of career option diversity in BCom jobs.  Even within professions such as finance and accounting, HR can be a great way to enter the industry if you’re more of a people person than a numbers person.

The most common fields people in HR enter are human resources management, organizational consulting, and industrial relations. HR can be a great way to get a seat at the executive table in almost any industry and is sometimes less competitive than finance or accounting tracks.
